Over 50 years of experience when talking about Chiropractic Care.
The benefits of Chiropractic care for children have become increasingly evident as the number of children receiving Chiropractic care continues to rise. Chiropractic research has overwhelmingly shown the benefit of Chiropractic care for children. Many pediatric issues can be addressed from biomechanical instabilities of the spine, ADHD, Scoliosis, Colic, Headaches, Earaches and many more. Feel free to talk to us concerning your child’s health.
The young spine also has a high degree of ligament laxity, which permits a greater degree of motion of individual vertebral structures. It is this ligament laxity, which makes adjustments of a child’s spine possible with very little pressure. A child’s spinal vertebrae therefore can be adjusted without placing the structures under any significant stress. Another characteristic feature of the pediatric spine is that the popping sound, heard when adjusting the adult spine, will be heard less frequently in children. This is likely due to a combination of immature developing joint surfaces and the increased joint range of motion encountered in the developing spine.
During childhood, micro and macro traumas, such as falls, are expected to the pediatric spine. This occurrence cannot be controlled or eliminated. The cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions will be subjected to childhood trauma. Trauma to the pediatric spine may result in misalignments of the spine.
The research community is now paying attention to the pediatric population and back pain. Back pain is a leading health complaint in the adult population. This complaint contributes to loss of work time and decreased quality of life. The adult population is often managed by invasive approaches (i.e., surgery, drugs and therapy) that are not always successful.
The Chiropractic profession has been recognized for its positive results in approaching back pain in the adult population.
It is not uncommon for the Chiropractor to evaluate the adult spine with acute or chronic back pain. Maybe the ideal time to evaluate and render care for the vertebral subluxation ( a noninvasive approach to back pain) would be the pediatric population. Once again, like Dentistry, children would benefit if Chiropractic would actively partake in the prevention of disease processes.
Infantile Colic is a curious and mysterious condition. First described in 1894, Colic has no verified cause(s). Countless studies have, however, determined what it's not caused by: air or constrictions in the intestines; gastrointestinal transit time; intestinal hormones; intestinal microflora; method of birth delivery; use of pudenal block; epidural analgesia or intravenous oxytocin.
Dimethicone, the drug used in a randomized, controlled clinical trial on Colic in Denmark comparing it to Chiropractic adjustment, has been shown to be “ no better than placebo treatment” in several good controlled studies. Chiropractic adjustments have a positive effect on reducing or eliminating infantile Colic.
This study concluded: "Spinal manipulation is normally used in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, and the results of this trial leave open two possible interpretations. Either spinal manipulation is effective in the treatment of the internal digestive, visceral, disorder infantile Colic or infantile Colic is, in fact, a musculoskeletal disorder, and not as normally assumed, visceral."
